CARIBBEAN DIVISION

The OMACHA Foundation developed a program of investigations in the Colombian Caribbean between 1994 to 1998, specifically in the Gulf of Morrosquillo, estuary of the old and new delta of the Sinú River (Bay of Cispatá and Boca Tinajones) and reefs of San Bernardo's Islands.

In this region studies were carried out on the following: abundance, distribution, habitat use and behaviour of coastal Sotalia fluviatilis and Tursiops truncatus, in order to determine the health of this particular population and to propose conservational strategies for these species. Equally, investigations on fishing resources of the area were done, with species like the bass (Centropomus undecimalis) and the lined mojarra (Eugerres plumieri).

Also workshops and meetings were developed with artisanal fishermen from the area, so as to guide them in their organisation as a whole. These activities were carried out in association with the INPA (National Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture).

Also, educational and recreational activities were carried out in schools and universities, as well as for the tourists and people that visited the area.
