The OMACHA Foundation is a non-government and non-profit organisation, created to study, research and protect fauna and aquatic ecosystems in Colombia. The work is based on the mutual collaboration between investigators and the community to draw up guidelines for the sustainable development of aquatic resources.
The investigation plan constitutes three basic programmes, which taken together provide the bases for conservation strategies.
1. Bioecological Programme:
This programme mainly consists on distribution, behaviour, population dynamics and reproduction studies of different species of aquatic fauna. The aim is that through these studies it would be possible to increase knowledge regarding the current status of the species and their habitat and, where appropriate, encourage repopulation.
2. Socio-cultural Programme:
This programme evaluates the interaction that exists between human communities, aquatic species and the environment. It includes the conservation of oral traditions and ecological practices that benefit the environment as well as the study of support activities related to the aquatic environment.
3. Education Programme:
Created in order to develop campaigns and education activities based on the information provided by the first two programmes. It is directed to fishermen, teachers, children, authorities, guides, tourists and other groups. The training of university students and professionals in the field of the investigation are also considered within the programme.
